The Application Process
1) Resume and Cover Letter. Please send your resume and cover letter to md@taiwan-teachers.com. You can send them as text in the email message or as an attached Microsoft Word file.
2) Questionnaire. Fill out our on-line questionnaire (here too!). You must provide information on your work, travel and second language experience. You will also be asked when and where you will be available for an interview. There is also a short section where you can tell us about your preferences regarding scooters, apartments and language courses.
We will respond when we receive each of the above from you. We will let you know via email or phone when you are scheduled for your interview.
The Interview Since Taiwan-Teachers began we have put emphasis on quality. At first Josh flew to Canada a few times a year to interview people himself. The advantages of this was that we knew each applicant had excellent potential as a teacher and would succeed if given training and resources. It also meant that each teacher could ask detailed questions about living and teaching in Taiwan and the details of our program. As interest in our program has grown this system has become impossible! Luckily, we now have many former teachers who have finished their year with us (or had been here previously) who are returning home and want to spread the word. Each interviewer has lived and taught in Taiwan. They are ready and willing to answer all your questions about life here, in detail. They also have known us and our program since the beginning, and can answer all your questions. For more information on our team, click here.During the first half hour of the interview you will watch a film showing street scenes and other sights around Southern Taiwan. You will then have the chance to ask us as many questions as you want about our program and life in Taiwan. We will then ask you some questions based on your resume and your responses to the questionnaire.
You will be asked to give a short teaching demonstration. You can choose to prepare your own topic (in the past we have had demonstrations on tying your shoes, hitchhiking, and safe driving). However, you may be asked to present one of our topics as well. Don't Panic! We know that if we were asked to do a demonstration a few years ago our knees would have been shaking. We make a HUGE allowance for the fact that you may not have taught before, and may not have much public speaking experience either. Try to relax, have fun... but don't stare at you shoes. At this point we may have all the information we need to decide if you are the kind of responsible, fun teachers we need. If so, and you are still excited about coming to Taiwan, we will both sign the Letter of Agreement. The Letter of Agreement states when you expect to arrive in Kaohsiung and what services you can expect from us when you land. After you have confirmed that you are going to work with us, we go to work for you. We will provide you with the paper work for your visitor's visa and answer any questions you may have. We can answer any tax questions you may have (although we are not accountants and this doesn't constitute financial advising in any sense!). You are now ready to get all the benefits of working with Taiwan-Teachers.
If you are applying to arrive during the Off Season (arriving Sept. 2001 to Apr. 2002), you will be given what recent job postings we have, complete with digital pictures, class schedule, including information about the number of students, their ages, class sizes, pay, etc. You will be given contact information of former teachers. When you find a job that you think might meet your requirements then we will get down to the nitty gritty. We will fax you a copy of their contract (for you to see, not to sign!) and we will reconfirm all the major points with both you and the management. When you both come to an agreement about the start time, then it is up to you to book the flights and get over here! We will help you get settled when you arrive (see Settlement). You will be asked to sign the contract with the school that you have been in contact with only if you find that the offer they made you and the description of the program meets what you see here. We are not obliged to any school, and will fully support you if you find the school has misrepresented itself in any way.
